A key that needs jiggling, a bolt that only throws when you lift the handle, a cylinder that spins loose in the door. These are small annoyances in Don Vale homes that become lockouts if ignored. We tune, rebuild or swap the part at fault and leave the door working like it did when it was new.

The fix, explained · Don Vale
The fix
Winter creates its own kind of lockout. Meltwater runs into a keyway during the day and freezes overnight, a weather-exposed cylinder stiffens in the cold, and a door that shrank in January may drop its bolt out of line with the strike.
The fix
A business lockout service reopens commercial premises when the door is locked and nobody on site can open it. The locksmith begins by confirming that the person asking for entry has authority to act for the business, through identification and a document or a phone call that ties them to the premises.
The fix
Broken key extraction is the removal of a snapped key piece from a lock so it can go back to work. It is done with slim hooks and spiral extractors that slide into the keyway beside the fragment, catch the cuts in the blade and draw it out the way it went in.
The fix
A failed break-in is still a repair. When a lock holds against a pry bar or a kick, the force goes somewhere: a strike plate bends, screws loosen, the door edge takes a gouge, the deadbolt binds where the bolt met the strike under load.

The fix
The visit runs in a set order. On the phone you describe what the key does: refuses to turn, spins freely, or works only when the door is pushed.

The fix
A key ring rarely holds only house keys, so a same-visit rekey looks at everything that was on it. The mechanical house keys are handled by repinning the cylinders.

A visit to Don Vale ends with a walkthrough. The locksmith shows you how the new hardware works, which key does what, how to set a code or change a combination, and what small maintenance keeps everything turning. You should be able to use every part of the door without calling us back to ask how.

A locksmith who listens. The job starts with your description, not our assumptions. What you have noticed about the door often points to the cause before we touch it.
Honest about what is worth doing. Some hardware deserves saving and some does not. We tell you which and why, so you spend on what makes a difference.
Left better than found. The door works, the area is clean and you have keys, notes and a clear idea of what to watch for. That is the standard for every visit.

The keypad on the smart lock blinks once and goes dark. The batteries have finally given up, your phone is at four percent, and the little backup key that came in the box is in a kitchen drawer on the other side of the door.

2 / 9
You came home to find the front door standing open. The deadbolt is still thrown, but the strike plate is dangling from one screw and a fist-sized piece of the jamb is lying on the hall floor.

3 / 9
The spare under the planter by the side door is gone. Everyone in the family swears they did not take it, the planter has clearly been shifted, and you have no idea how long ago that happened.

4 / 9
Arthritis has made the small house key hard to grip and turn, especially with gloves on in January. Pressing a few buttons, or tapping a fob against the lock, would make coming home in winter far easier.

5 / 9
The renovation is finished and the contractors have gone, along with the loaner keys they used for six weeks. Trades, delivery drivers and an inspector all came through, and the front door still answers to the key that was passed around the site.

6 / 9
The car is yours now, but somebody else still holds a key to it. Adding another key is not enough; you want the old ones to stop working the vehicle so the question is settled for good.

7 / 9
A teenager just passed a driving test and reasonably wants a key of their own rather than negotiating over the family's single copy every time the car is needed. Two drivers and one key keep colliding on the same schedule.

8 / 9
A second driver has joined the household, and the one existing key gets handed back and forth between two schedules that rarely line up. Everyone agrees another key would settle the daily handoff, but nobody has looked into how a modern ignition actually learns a new one.

9 / 9
After a slushy week the key barely reaches accessory before it stalls, gritty and reluctant, where it used to move cleanly through every position. Warming the car up in the driveway hasn't changed how the barrel feels at all.

58%
Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In neighbourhoods of established homes, keys have often been copied many times over many owners. Rekeying every exterior door to one fresh key is the common first job, and it works on old cylinders just as well as on new ones.
23%
Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).
Where most homes are apartments or condos, storage lockers, bike rooms and parking gates carry their own locks. A locksmith can supply and key padlocks and cam locks for those spaces so one household ring covers everything it uses.
The opening itself is often the shortest part of the visit; verifying identification, examining the lock and testing the door afterwards take a share of the time too. A standard knob or deadbolt on a well-fitting door is generally a matter of minutes, while a high-security cylinder, a frozen lock or a swollen door takes longer. If a cylinder has to be drilled and replaced, or locks are rekeyed while the locksmith is there, allow extra time for that work.
Everything those keys fit. That usually means the front, back and side doors, the garage man-door, the mailbox and any padlocks, and in a rental the suite door with the landlord's involvement. Rekeying changes a serviceable cylinder to answer to a new key, and a cylinder that cannot be rekeyed is replaced instead. Doing every affected opening in one visit, keyed alike where the cylinders are compatible, means no forgotten door still answers to the stolen ring.
Winter is a normal time for this work. Cylinders come off the door and are pinned in the van, out of the wind, and go back on with a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant that sheds moisture rather than holding it the way oil does. A cleaned, dry-lubricated cylinder is less likely to freeze than the gritty one it replaced. Keeping a storm door closed over the main lock helps through freeze-thaw weeks.
Most models offer auto-lock, and it is one of the settings the locksmith configures with you. You choose the delay, from a few seconds to several minutes, and the lock throws the bolt on its own once the door has been closed that long. Models with a door sensor wait until the door is actually shut, which avoids the bolt extending into thin air. Families who have ever wondered whether the back door got locked tend to value this most.
