Smart Lock Installation

Arthritis has made the small house key hard to grip and turn, especially with gloves on in January. Pressing a few buttons, or tapping a fob against the lock, would make coming home in winter far easier.

In plain words

Our winters shape how a smart lock should be fitted. Cold drains batteries sooner, so the locksmith fits the maker's specified battery type, sets the low-battery alert to reach a checked phone, and shows how a fresh set goes in with gloves on. Meltwater that refreezes overnight can bind a bolt, so the strike is set to give the motor clearance. A storm door that traps summer heat, or a keypad facing driving snow, steers the choice of model and finish. Fitted this way, a smart lock is set up to perform through the cold months, even though batteries and materials still work harder in deep winter than in June.

  1. 1

What the household wants the lock to do

Before a model is chosen, the locksmith asks how the door will actually be used. Who needs to get in, and how often does that list change? Should the door lock itself after a set time, or stay as it is left? Is a message when it opens useful or annoying? Does anyone want to open it from a phone while away, which brings the network into play, or is a keypad at the door enough? Are there children, a caregiver, a cleaner or a dog walker who need their own codes? Those answers decide between a simple keypad deadbolt, a Bluetooth model, a Wi-Fi model or a lock that joins an existing home hub.

  2. 2

Retrofit locks that keep your outside hardware

Some smart locks mount only on the inside of the door and turn the deadbolt you already own, leaving the exterior face and the keyway as they were. Fitting one begins by checking that the existing deadbolt is on the model's compatibility list and that its tailpiece shape matches an adapter in the box. The interior thumb-turn is removed, the adapter fitted, and the motor unit clamped to the mounting plate so it sits square and turns the bolt through its full travel without slipping. Because the outside is untouched, these suit rented units where the landlord prefers the door unchanged, and older doors whose exterior hardware is worth keeping. The existing key keeps working alongside the phone.

  3. 3

Batteries, warnings and the cold months

A smart lock runs on batteries, and you leave knowing how that side of it behaves. The locksmith shows where the low-battery warning appears on the lock and in the app, how to swap the set, and which type to buy so the motor gets steady power. Cold shortens battery life, so a fresh set before the first hard frost is a sensible habit, and the alert should go to a phone someone actually reads. If the model has an external emergency power contact, you will have seen it used and know where a nine-volt battery lives for the day it is needed.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Retrofit versus full replacement

An interior-only unit that turns your existing deadbolt involves less door work than a complete new deadbolt with a keypad outside, and the two are quoted differently in both hardware and time.

  2. 2

    Door thickness and material

Thick doors need an extension kit, very thin or glass-panelled doors need particular models, and steel or fibreglass skins take longer to cut cleanly than wood. Each of these shapes both the parts list and the time.

  3. 3

    Finish and matching hardware

Standard finishes are the base. A less common finish, or replacing the knob or lever at the same time so the door matches, adds to the hardware portion of the quote.

Smart Lock Installation: questions

Advice · (289) 806-2827

What is the difference between a keypad lock, a Bluetooth lock and a Wi-Fi lock?

A keypad lock is operated at the door by code and needs no phone at all. A Bluetooth lock adds phone control when you are within a few metres, which covers most daily use and keeps the lock off the internet. A Wi-Fi lock, either built in or through a small bridge, lets you check and change the lock from anywhere and sends alerts, at the cost of more battery use and a dependence on the home network. Many models combine two of these.

Can the lock be set to lock itself?

Most models offer auto-lock, and it is one of the settings the locksmith configures with you. You choose the delay, from a few seconds to several minutes, and the lock throws the bolt on its own once the door has been closed that long. Models with a door sensor wait until the door is actually shut, which avoids the bolt extending into thin air. Families who have ever wondered whether the back door got locked tend to value this most.

Will summer heat behind my storm door damage the lock?

It can stress it, and it is one of the first things the locksmith looks at. A full-glass storm door on a south- or west-facing entrance can push the air between the doors well above what electronics are rated for on a hot afternoon. The usual answers are a storm door with a vent or screen, swapping to the screen panel for summer, or a model whose maker rates it for that exposure. With that handled, the lock is fine.

What the census means at the door

58%

Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older homes tend to have had many hands on their doors: owners, tenants, tradespeople, family. A locksmith visiting such a house pays attention to who holds keys now, and rekeying or a keyed-alike set often matters more than any new hardware.

23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Shared entrances mean fobs, intercoms and buzzers alongside conventional locks. A locksmith can service the mechanical side of those doors and advise on how the fob system and the cylinder work together when management asks.
